What is private health insurance?

Private health insurance, sometimes called Private Medical Insurance or PMI, pays for your private medical treatments and care. Private healthcare means no NHS waiting lists, fast access to  diagnosis and treatment and a high quality, comfortable hospital stay.

The benefits of health insurance:

As a private patient, you would benefit from:

  • Access to fast consultations and treatments, bypassing NHS waiting lists
  • Rest and recovery from the comfort of your own hospital room – normally with en suite facilities, high quality menus and unrestricted visiting hours
  • A choice of where and when your treatment takes place
  • A choice of your own specialist consultant, who will provide you with ongoing care throughout your treatment
  • Access to the latest drugs and therapies, including some not avaliable on the NHS

How to choose a private health plan that works for you

Your choice of PMI begins with the huge variety of policies on the market and how they match the level and type of care you require.

It’s not just about looking for cheap health insurance, but cover that offers real value by taking into account your lifestyle, your budget and your particular needs and wants.

What to think about when finding private health insurance

The first step towards finding a policy is to think about what kind of cover you need. Different policies offer different levels of protection,  from low-cost options which offer limited cover, through to more comprehensive schemes that include outpatient care plus treatments for cancersheart conditions and mental health issues.

Questions to think about are:

  • Do you want out-patient cover?
The more basic policies wouldn’t include diagnostic tests, outpatient consultations and outpatient treatment.
  • Do you need cover when abroad?
Overseas health cover isn’t included as standard, but can be added to your policy if you want cover abroad.
  • Do you want to be able to choose where to be treated?
Different policies offer differing lists of hospitals and clinics from which you can choose to be treated. Would you be happy to be seen at a local hospital recommended by your insurer, or would you want a broader range of options?
  • Which additional benefits are most important to you?
Options may include physiotherapy, psychiatric, chiropractic, optical, cancer care and even dental insurance.
  • How much can you afford?
Clearly there’s a strong correlation between the level of cover provided and its cost. As a rule of thumb, the more expensive the policy, the more it’ll cover.
  • Would you be willing to contribute to the cost of your care?
By agreeing to pay a policy excess when you claim, you are likely to secure a lower-cost premium.

As well as individual insurance for medical conditions, we can also help you find family health insurance so you can protect those you love, giving you invaluable peace of mind.
